Six injured in weekend accidents A Blythe woman died along with her unborn child when she was thrown out of a car on the Highway 56 Spur. According to state troopers, the wreck occurred around 2 p.m. Sunday when John Homer Clinton, 21, of Waynesboro lost control on his Cadillac Deville on a curve and overturned. According to Burke County Coroner Betty White, 19-year-old Angeleca Slusher, who was six and a half months pregnant, was killed instantly after she was ejected through the open sunroof and the car landed on top of her. White said Slusher's unborn child had also died by the time help arrived. Three others were injured in the wreck: Slusher's boyfriend Jay Clinton, his brother John who was driving and Sherrie Glackin of Waynesboro. White said the accident occurred along the same stretch of Highway 56 Spur where Burke County resident Bill Overton wrecked and died four months ago. Three others were injured in an unrelated wreck just over the county line on Highway 25. According to an accident report filed at the Richmond County Sheriff 's Office, Hephzibah resident Steve Oglesby, 41, was airlifted to MCG Health after he was ejected from his Corvette around 7:30 p.m. last Friday night. Officers believe Oglesby was racing with 37-year-old Michael Preddy of Augusta, who was also injured in the accident. According to the report, the two men were driving side-by-side at a high rate of speed when Preddy ran into the back of a tractor-trailer. Oglesby reportedly ran off the road trying to avoid the collision, but lost control and began flipping across the median. "His car shattered to pieces," one witness said while another described car parts flying across the roadway. Preddy and the truck driver, Kevin Barry of Missouri, were transported to MCG Health with non-life threatening injuries. While Oglesby's injuries were considered critical at the time of the accident, his condition had been upgraded to fair as of Tuesday morning. Officers indicated Oglesby and Preddy will be charged in the accident, based on statements from numerous witnesses who say they were racing at speeds up to 120 mph. |
