10 years ago: Jan. 28, 1998

The Rev. Todd Ware, minister of education and youth at First Baptist Church, and Sgt. John Goodman of Burke County High School were honored by the Burke County Chamber of Commerce as Citizen and Employee of the Year, respectively.

A & W Oil Inc. donated $7,500 toward the completion of the Waynesboro campus of Augusta Tech.

25 years ago: Jan. 26, 1983

Ellis Lovett was named manager of Planters EMC, succeeding Cody Kent, who retired after more than 30 years of service.

First National Bank of Waynesboro closed the year with assets of just over $20 million.

A report authorized by Georgia Power said that a comprehensive high school was the top priority for education improvements in the county.

50 years ago: Jan. 30, 1958

County agent Joel Chappell expressed fears that 26,000 acres of farmland could be taken out of production under federal acreage reserve programs. He said many farm workers would be out of jobs and forced to leave the county.

Joe Parker and George DeLoach took top honors in the annual golf tournament benefiting the March of Dimes.

75 years ago: Jan. 27, 1933

Dr. Everett Bargeron announced plans to open an office in Sardis, occupying the facility formerly used by Dr. Cook.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dye announced the birth of a son, Paul Dye Jr.

"Devil and the Deep" starring Gary Cooper and Tallulah Bankhead was playing at the Grand Theatre.
