A series of fires has left two homes destroyed and a backyard in ruins.
The first fire erupted Sunday, Jan. 13. Firefighters reported to a North Lake Drive residence, where they found heavy fire blazing from the roof. According to a report filed at the Burke County EMA, the heat from the fire prohibited firefighters from entering the residence any further than the garage.
The owner, William Hunter, and his wife, told firefighters they were watching television when they first smelled the smoke. After noticing fire between the fireplace and the wall, Hunter attempted to control the fire with a nearby fire extinguisher. Although his attempt failed, he was able to remove his 1969 Camaro, four-wheeler, golf cart and set of rims from the garage. EMA Chief Rusty Sanders said he believed the fire was caused by a fireplace malfunction.
Just over a week later, firefighters responded to another house fire, this time on Four Points Road. According to a report, Shanna Bacino was home-schooling her children when she smelled burning plastic. After spotting smoke under her porch through the kitchen window, she rushed outside and grabbed a garden hose. When Bacino realized the fire was too heavy, she ran inside to rescue her children, the report said.

When firefighters arrived, they found the two-story log house in flames. The roof collapsed shortly after, and the cabin was a total loss.
Chief Sanders said heat lamps on the back porch, which were set near blankets, most likely caused the fire. The family escaped without injury.
The following day, firefighters were called to a grass fire on Magruder Road.
Chief Sanders said the call was received shortly before 2 p.m. from a man whose weekend trash fire had apparently rekindled. When firefighters arrived, they found several piles of trash, numerous tires, an abandoned mobile home and a number of old cars in flames.
Although the smoke could be seen from more than 10 miles away, firefighters were able to extinguish the fires within two hours.
