Bears trample JCHS, slip by Benedictine

      The Bears defeated Jenkins County High School in a blow out last Tuesday but the following weekend didn't prove so easy. The Burke County High School boys team (12-5, 3-3) beat the Eagles in Jenkins County 82-42. The Bears gained an early lead in the game and never gave it up.

      The Cubs made school history Saturday afternoon when they claimed Burke County Middle School's first boys basketball region championship. The Burke County Middle School boys (11-2) defeated Langston Chapel Middle School in Statesboro 40-27 for the title.

      The Spartan basketball team (10-4, 0-3) picked up two wins and a region loss last week. They began the week with a 79- 60 win over the Thomas Jefferson Academy Jaguars on Monday, Jan. 14, with head coach Todd Layton referring to the victory as the best game in three years.

Smith bags his first buck
      Landon Smith, 10, son of Jake and Holly Smith of Waynesboro, killed his first buck Jan. 6, while hunting with his father and his brother, Jamie. He shot the 6-pointer, which weighed 145 pounds, with a 223 rifle.
