Westminster groundbreaking
The congregation of Westminster Presbyterian Church gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony Sunday, Dec. 30, where they braved the rain in order to praise God for allowing them to build an addition to their church. Burke County Commissioner Alphonso Andrews, who is a member of Westminster, said the 1,800-square foot addition will feature an enlarged fellowship hall, two classrooms and additional bathroom space. The Rev. Richard Holland, pastor, praised his congregation of less than 50 for raising more than 50 percent of the money required for the addition. "I could not ask for a better congregation," he said. "They've gone above the $100,000 for the project without selling … by just reaching in and giving." Special guests for the ceremony included Waynesboro Mayor Jesse Stone; Jimmy Dixon, chairman of the Burke County Board of Commissioners; Glenn Wiggins, contractor; Hubert Roberts, chairman of the church's building committee; and church elders Neal C. Leonard Sr. and Michael Searles. Pictured breaking ground are Roberts, at left, and Commissioner Andrews.
