The Bears capped off the weekend with a win Saturday night over Greenbrier High School.
The Burke County High School boys team (8-4, 0-2) won 47-36 on the Wolfpack's home court.
Senior DeVonda Lewis and junior Bobby Burum led the Bears in scoring with 15 points each. Sophomore Martaveous Smith tacked on another 7.
Burke County managed the win despite missing two of their top players, senior starters Maurice Doyle and Mack Golden.
Golden missed the game to attend a funeral, and Doyle was nursing an ankle injury he sustained in practice. Doyle is expected to return this week.
"I was proud of the guys for bouncing back after a very tough game on Friday," coach Purvis Dukes said.
Friday was tough, indeed.
While Golden was on the court Friday night, Doyle was sorely missed.
The Bears fell to Hephzibah High School 44-43 after a neckand neck contest all evening.
"We definitely missed (Maurice's) presence," Dukes said.
Lewis led the Bears against the Rebels with 14 points and was followed by Golden, who scored 10. The team was 8-10 from the free-throw line.
While the Bears stole the lead with just seconds left in the game, Hephzibah retaliated. Two missed shots as the clock wound down proved fatal for Burke County.
Dukes said the team must aggressively tackle the rest of the schedule if they want to repeat last year's success.
"Now, we must try and attack the sub-region play hard due to the fact we are 0-2," he said. "Last season, we finished 8-2 in the sub-region, and if we're going to get to that point, it's going to take maximum effort from everyone involved."
The Bears traveled to South Effingham High School in Guyton Tuesday, but scores were not available at press time.
Burke County will host Richmond Hill High School Friday night and play at Jenkins County High School Tuesday.
