Students attend RYLA
Every summer, Rotary clubs across Georgia select students to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership camp at South Georgia College in Douglas. The Waynesboro Rotary Club selected four area high schoolers from Burke County to attend RYLA last June, and they spoke at a recent meeting about their experiences. Pictured with J.D. While Senator John McCain was expected to get Georgia's 15 electoral votes, Burke County voters backed Senator Barack Obama. He carried the county 5,231 to 4,342. At 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, McCain was leading the state with 54 percent of Georgia's popular vote. More...

Pregnant woman murdered

The body of a murdered pregnant woman was found near a peanut field in rural Burke County. GBI agents say Alajandra Canche, 32, was shot once in the head and left in the backseat of her parked car. Family members told officers she was four months pregnant and had been living in Savannah. More...
