Gator Gamble "Kachunga" dances around the front end of an eight-foot alligator during the Waynesboro Exchange Club Fair's special attraction last Wednesday. Downtown Waynesboro did it. Last week, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) put its stamp of approval on a two-year effort to make the core commercial district a Main Street community. "You've done all the tedious work and laid the foundation," DCA representative Mary Alice Applegate said at an assessment last Wednesday before noting an old adage about putting on your pants before your shoes. "You've got on your pants … now it's time to put on your shoes and start walking." DCA Commissioner Mike Beatty, at right, came to Waynesboro on Friday and made it official in the company of a crowd including Waynesboro's Downtown Development Director Andrea Stein, left, and Mayor George DeLoach, center. The Downtown Development Authority's next hurdle will be obtaining a national Main Street designation, which will be decided at the National Main Street conference in early 2009. In the meantime, the newly earned state designation means DCA will begin assisting with the redevelopment of Downtown Waynesboro's core-commercial area.
