Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel made a stop in Waynesboro last week for a small gathering at Waynesboro attorney and former mayor Jesse Stone's office. Handel, whose office manages elections in Georgia, said Election Day is her office's main focus right now. "For the past year, counties have been working very hard to be ready for November fourth," she said. "Just think about the practical attempt to manage four million people doing the same thing on one day." Handel hopes that early voting will help alleviate congestion on Election Day, but her office still plans to have some 15,000 poll workers on hand. Nearly 400,000 early votes have already been cast, about 1,000 of those in Burke County. None of those votes will be counted until Nov. 4. Handel said Georgia's new voter registration numbers are similar to what was seen in 2004 with about 403,000 new voters as of Sept. 30. As for voter turnout, she believes it will also be comparable. In the last presidential election, Georgia had about 77 percent voter turnout. In Burke County, 82 percent of registered voters cast their ballots. More...
