Bears fall to Baldwin
      The Bears started region play with a tough loss in Milledgeville. Burke County High School's football team (2-3, 0- 1) fell to Baldwin High School (6-0, 2-0) 17-7 last Friday. The Braves took an early lead in the game and never let go. It was Homecoming night for Baldwin, giving the already dominating program even more of a reason to win.

Bears welcome Wildcats to The Den for Homecoming
      The Bears will host Richmond Hill High School for Homecoming this Friday. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. in The Bear Den. The Wildcats could be the Bears' best chance to gain some momentum in region play. Richmond Hill (2-3) lost its first two region games to Thomson 49-7 and West Laurens 40-14.

Chamber sponsors golf tournament
      What do you get when you make a hole-in-one on the 11th at the Waynesboro Country Club? Well, if you're participating in the Burke County Chamber of Commerce's first ever golf tournament, you'll be driving away in a new car. The new car contest, sponsored by William Mizell Ford, is one of many for the Chamber's Nov. 6 event.

Lady Bears catch winning wave
      After a disappointing first half of the season, the Lady Bears have found their groove on the volleyball court. Last week, Burke County High School's teams won all three matches they hosted, with a junior varsity win over West Laurens and varsity victories over West Laurens and Swainsboro.

Burke County's senior softball player honored
     Burke County High School's lone senior softball player was honored last Tuesday before the team's game against West Laurens. Mallorie Shaw, who began playing when she was five years old, has been a member of Burke County's varsity team since her freshman year and put in a number of outstanding performances from the pitcher's mound. After graduation, Mallorie plans to attend college and pursue a career in physical therapy. The Lady Bears began play in the region tournament in Dublin yesterday (Tuesday) but results were not available at press time. If Burke County wins two games early in the double elimination tournament, they will play again Thursday for seeding in the state playoffs.

Golf tourney to raise money for Boggs
      The Boggs Rural Life Center in Keysville will host a golf tournament Saturday, Oct. 11, at Applewood Golf Course. Funds raised at the event will be used to help restore buildings at the historic Boggs Academy property. The one day shootout will offer cash and prizes worth more than $850 to the top six teams.

     As part of the 2008 Burke County High School homecoming festivities, the homecoming court will be honored during halftime of Friday night's game, which begins at 7:30. Seniors selected for the court include, pictured above left to right, front row: Courtney Collins, Jasmine D. Williams and Mallorie Shaw; and back row: Yasma Lynch, Sarah Swanagin and Sierra Pittman. Spartans defeat Crusaders for region win
      The Spartans (3-2-1, 1-0) showed up to play football, and they left Lyons Friday night the victor in their first region game of the season. "We did exactly what we were supposed to do, with the exception of a couple of plays … and they took advantage of us on those," Spartan head coach Buddy Sorrow said of the game against Robert Toombs Christian Academy.

It's not over
     The Edmund Burke Academy Lady Spartans played for the region championship for the first time since 1988 yesterday (Tuesday), but their hopes were dashed when Bulloch Academy's Lady Gators defeated them 5-0. The girls finished the regular season as co-champs, but yesterday's game was a special playoff to determine who got the title and first seed in state play.
