Bears fall to rival in scrimmage
      It was bad news for the Bears in Louisville Friday night. Burke County High School took on their rivals in neighboring Jefferson County for a preseason scrimmage and fell 30-14 to the Warriors. This season marks the first in a decade that the two teams won't match up on the regular schedule. They settled instead for playing by game rules in a preseason contest.

March-A-Thon planned for Friday night
      The Pride of Burke County will be marching until the sun comes up this weekend. A march-a-thon fundraiser is scheduled to begin this Friday at 6 p.m. and continue until 6 a.m. on Saturday in the Burke County High School football stadium.

Lady Bears start solid on the diamond
      The Lady Bears are off to a good start. Burke County High School's softball team collected two wins in their first tournament of the season and will go on to play in the championship game. They beat Lincoln County High School 2-1 and nailed Butler High School 20-4 in the Laney Wildcat Invitational over the weekend.

Burke County's Washingtons may both be red-shirted at UGA
      Burke County has two studentathletes named Washington listed on the football roster of the number one pre-season ranked Georgia Bulldogs. But neither of them may play a single down this season as the Dogs compete for a national championship.

Local ballplayer represents the state in Hawaiian tournament
      While many highschoolers spent their summers catching up on sleep and swimming or holding down part-time jobs, one local teenager spent his sharpening the skills of his favorite pastime. Chandler Johnson's love for baseball led him to the shores of Hawaii this past June, where he represented the state of Georgia in the ninth annual King Kamhameha Baseball Classic.

Lady Spartans start season with a win
      The Edmund Burke Academy Lady Spartans softball team opened their season with a win last week, defeating Nathanael Greene Academy 9-6. Head coach Aaron Phillips said every girl in the dugout saw at least three innings of playing time, which enabled him to move them around on the field and see which positions suited each player.
