Another hurdle crossed
NRC issues final report on environmental impact of new reactors and recommends approval
      One more milestone has been reached in the expected expansion of Vogtle Electric Generating Plant. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff issued a final environmental impact statement recommending that an Early Site Permit (ESP) be issued for Plant Vogtle. Approval of the ESP means Plant Vogtle is a suitable site for new reactors.

      Hawkins Whitaker Real Estate and the Burke County Chamber of Commerce were hosts for an open house at Ridge Pointe Subdivision Thursday, Aug. 14. The new subdivision, located off Hadden Pond Road, has 65 lots from 1 to 1.

Former politician questions employee use of city vehicles
      A former state representative says City of Waynesboro employees are misusing their takehome vehicles. At Monday's city council meeting, resident Alberta Anderson took issue with the city's vehicle use policy and cited an abuse she recently witnessed.

The last mile
      Law enforcement officers from across the Southeast came to Burke County last Thursday to pay their final respects to the late Magistrate Judge Al Bell. The procession included more than 150 law enforcement vehicles and spanned approximately two miles.

Unemployment rate soars to its highest in 15 years
      Georgia's unemployment rate rose to 6.2 percent last month - the highest since March 1993. While Burke County's July numbers have not been released, June's figure was a whopping 8.7 percent … the 16th highest of the state's 159 counties.

Frazier, Wimberly hosts for 'meet and greet'
      Burke County residents can talk shop with two elected officials this Saturday. State Rep. Gloria Frazier (D-Augusta) and magistrate judge elect Sterling Wimberly will host a meet and greet Saturday, Aug. 23, 1-3 p.m., at the Burke County Library.

County struggles to make budget work
      Burke County Commissioners are trimming what they can from a budget that's already been tightened by higher costs and a decreasing tax digest. "In my nearly eight years on the commission, this has got to be the worst shape I've seen the budget in," commissioner Wayne Crockett said at a recent meeting.

Rep. Frazier to lead sickle cell study
      Burke County's state representative Gloria Frazier (DHephzibah) has been tapped to head a sickle cell anemia study. She and a four-person committee, which includes Rep. Tyrone Brooks (D-Atlanta), will meet with healthcare professionals, sickle cell patients and their families in the upcoming months.

Funding slashed for Even Start
      Federal funding for a program that helps Burke County parents earn their GEDs has been cut. Burke County Even Start, which began eight years ago, will no longer receive any funds from the U.S. Department of Education. Around $200,000 was allocated annually to provide classes, testing, transportation and childcare for parents enrolled in the program.

Eleven vie for title in Miss Black Burke County
      Eleven young women will compete Saturday, Aug. 23 for the title of Miss Black Burke County. The pageant will begin at 7 p.m. at the Burke County Office Park Auditorium. The 30th annual event is sponsored by the Burke County Black Coalition under the direction of president Valencia Patterson.

Reward increased for information on county vandalism
      Commissioners have upped the ante. During last week's county commission meeting, the board voted to raise the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals responsible for vandalizing county property to $3,500. The amount was previously set at $1,000.

      Burke County families who have been touched by transplants or the need for one may benefit from a special event this Saturday, August 23. The Georgia Transplant Foundation is hosting its annual Trends in Transplant Conference at the Medical College of Georgia Alumni Center in Augusta.
