Leaders focus on workforce issues
      Burke County's industry and education leaders agree. If they work together, they can produce a stronger labor workforce. Last Thursday, the two groups had a meeting of the minds at the Burke County Chamber of Commerce's monthly Existing Industry Committee meeting.

Speeding cars, unfinished work
      Residents in the West Ninth Street neighborhood want city officials to do something about speeding motorists. "From Lovers Lane to Martin Luther King Boulevard, it's almost like a racetrack," resident Pauline Jenkins, the city's former vice-mayor, told Waynesboro officials last Monday night.

Opinions clash at Plant Vogtle hearing
      Supporters talked of economic development, school funding and a clean source of energy for the future. Opponents talked of dangerous radiation, nuclear waste and destroyed habitats. They all talked about what two new reactors at Vogtle Electric Generating Plant would mean for Burke County and beyond.

NRC says Vogtle was safe
      Vogtle Electric Generating Plant was operated safely last year, according to a report compiled by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. NRC senior resident inspector at Plant Vogtle, Gerry McCoy, reported at the plant's annual assessment meeting last week that the plant's operating company, Southern Nuclear, met all major safety objectives.

Sheriff helps clean up
     The sheriff's "litter patrol" was at it again last Tuesday afternoon, picking up trash alongside Corley Road. Sheriff Greg Coursey, at left, is pictured with Mike Popplewell of CSRA Probation, center, and State Court Judge Jerry Daniel, who also came along to observe the pick-up efforts. Last weekend, Judge Daniel sent a large number of community service workers to pick up litter on Hephzibah-Keysville Road, while a crew of inmates was still busy cleaning up the mess on Corley Road. Clean-up had begun the previous weekend. Both officials stated they were committed to helping with litter control and discussed ways they could further the efforts and get more people involved. The organization burkecountyNOW has coordinated those efforts thus far. A spokesperson for the group said both are to be commended for their work. - Roy F. Chalker Jr.

First female in circuit
      The Augusta Judicial Circuit has a new District Attorney - and she's the first female in its history. The circuit's senior most assistant DA Ashley Wright has stepped up to the top spot following an appointment from Gov. Sonny Perdue last week.

Students take advantage of extra classroom time to prepare for tests
School on Saturday?
      Nearly 100 of Burke County's students gave up sleeping in on Saturday mornings for several weeks this spring. Instead, they headed to the school house for an extra halfday of learning. Burke County's middle and high schools offered a Saturday session to students who have struggled with math and reading/ language arts this year.

HPV vaccine offered for free
      The Burke County Health Department is doing its part to promote cancer prevention as the community prepares for its annual Relay For Life event this weekend. The health department will offer girls, ages 9-18, the first dose in the genital human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine series for free.

Library holds exhibit
      The Burke County Library will hold an art exhibit featuring Karen Predue Davis during the month of May. A reception hosted by the Friends of the Library will be held this Sunday, May 4, from 2-4 p.m. Davis' choice of medium is oils, but she also uses pastels, acrylics and color pencils.

      Burke County residents coping with low insurance settlements and late-arriving bills for damages and losses caused by the mid-March severe storms and tornadoes are running out of time to register for state and federal disaster assistance.

Discounted rabies vaccines available
      Pet owners throughout the county will have an opportunity to get their dogs or cats vaccinated for rabies at half the price. Through a Burke County 4-H fundraiser, vaccinations will be offered twice during the month of May at various locations across the county.

      The True Citizen and its sister publication, The Millen News, are looking for two summer interns. Both papers were selected for an eight-week internship program by the Georgia Press Association Educational Foundation.

     Honors picnic On Thursday, April 17, Burke County Schools held their annual Honor Roll Picnic in Waynesboro's City Park. The event is held each year to award students in grades thirdeighth who have made honor roll each nine weeks of the current school term. Honor roll status is attained by having a 90 or above average.       When Frank Hancock was called to the house of a mother with two children sickened by E. coli bacteria, he discovered that the water from their well was the source. He found other wells in the county with problems, too. "I don't think our experience is different than any other county," said Hancock, a University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent in Henry County.
