Vogtle Electric Generating Plant was operated safely last year, according to a report compiled by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. NRC senior resident inspector at Plant Vogtle, Gerry McCoy, reported at the plant's annual assessment meeting last week that the plant's operating company, Southern Nuclear, met all major safety objectives. More ... The sheriff's "litter patrol" was at it again last Tuesday afternoon, picking up trash alongside Corley Road. Sheriff Greg Coursey, at left, is pictured with Mike Popplewell of CSRA Probation, center, and State Court Judge Jerry Daniel, who also came along to observe the pick-up efforts. Last weekend, Judge Daniel sent a large number of community service workers to pick up litter on Hephzibah-Keysville Road, while a crew of inmates was still busy cleaning up the mess on Corley Road. Clean-up had begun the previous weekend. Both officials stated they were committed to helping with litter control and discussed ways they could further the efforts and get more people involved. Honors picnic On Thursday, April 17, Burke County Schools held their annual Honor Roll Picnic in Waynesboro's City Park. The event is held each year to award students in grades thirdeighth who have made honor roll each nine weeks of the current school term. Honor roll status is attained by having a 90 or above average.
