Waynesboro celebrates Georgia Cities Week
Living it up Downtown
      City officials will celebrate Georgia Cities Week April 20-26 with a full slate of community events centered around this year's theme, "Living it up Downtown." To kick off the week-long celebration, Mayor George DeLoach and city council members will recognize winning sixth graders in the "If I Were Mayor" essay contest at their April 21 meeting.

Sheriff helps burkecountyNOW in effort to clean up streets
      A local organization appears to have found an ally in its crusade to clean up the county. Members of burkecountyNOW approached the county commission at its February meeting, laying out a list of their largest concerns; however, spokesman Louis Hrabovsky said the group's goal was not to point out problems without providing solutions.

Waynesboro native rallies young voters
      Since being crowned Miss Augusta, Waynesboro native Laura Stone has been reaching out to Georgia's youngest voters. "We must come to respect the powerful voice that the youth vote has," she said between organizing registration drives and speaking at schools. "I seek to empower this generation to register to vote and register their peers to vote.

      Waynesboro city councilmen gave a nod to a $2,200 water line for the Boss Hog Cook-off but stifled a motion to spend $1,500 for weed control on Jones Lake.

Burke buses enter mission field
      For years, they hauled kids around Burke County. But after retiring this year, they're off to Nigeria to enter the mission field. They are school buses. The latest batch of big yellow diesels to be retired from the Burke County school system's fleet has been sold to a group of Nigerian missionaries, according to transportation director Leonard Hill.

Vogtle holds hearing in Augusta
      Those interested in new reactors at Vogtle Electric Generating Plant may weigh in on Sunday, April 27, and Monday, April 28, in Augusta. The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board, an independent judicial arm of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has scheduled sessions to hear statements concerning the new reactors and their potential environmental effects.
