Team registration underway for Boss Hog Cook-off

Prospective cooking teams have four weeks to register for Boss Hog.

Spots in the May 9-10 state championship Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) cookoff are up for grabs through April 9.

According to event organizer Nan Lynch, the competition will be limited to the first 40 teams to sign up.

The two-day event will be held at Mr. Golf Carts Warehouse Distribution Center (old Perfection complex), just off Highway 56 North, where teams will be provided with water, electricity and indoor restrooms.

While this marks the Downtown Organization of Retailer's third Boss Hog Cook-off, May's event will be one of many firsts - including its debut with the KCBS and as an official state championship.

With bigger competition also comes bigger money. The former $2,000 purse has swollen to $10,000 and cash prizes will be awarded for first through 10th place in four separate categories.

A $250 flat fee covers the chicken, pork, ribs and beef brisket competitions - or teams may choose specific categories for a charge of $75 apiece.

All teams are also eligible for the free May 9 Wing-a-Ding-Fling ... and the $200 in prize money that comes with it.

According to Lynch, each team will receive 10 pounds of chicken wings to cook and share.

While the public samples free wings, event sponsors will pick the winners.
