After more than a year of planning and researching, a comprehensive plan for Burke County has been developed and now adopted by the county's commissioners. Burke County teenager Joe Shepherd made the top 10 on Game Show Network's National Vocabulary Championship. The 16-year-old was gleaned from more than 100,000 high school students and competed in Los Angeles Monday against 49 other topranking wordsmiths from across the country. "We were surprised and tickled for him," Joe's mom Sydney said after his finish. "And best of all, he'll have the opportunity to go back and compete again his junior and senior years." In Monday's game show competition, Joe and nine competitors made the first cut when they bested 30 other teens by buzzing in the most correct answers. According to contest representatives, Joe had a "perfect round." Those 10 then went on to the semi-final speed round where Joe and four others were eliminated. Aliya Deri, 16, Pleasanton, Calif., won the championship and $40,000 in scholarship money. More ...
