Qualifying begins next month for the majority of county offices
      The gates of Burke County politics are wide open. Qualifiying begins next month for the bulk of the county's elected offices, including sheriff, tax commissioner, coroner, clerk of court and three judgeships. All five of Burke County's commission seats are up for grabs, as well as two of its five board of education posts.

Dr. Alexander retires after more than 40 years of service to the community
      The doors aren't closing, but he's putting down his stethoscope and picking up a fishing pole ... or maybe a rake. After 43 years, Dr. Jim Alexander has sold his veterinary business and decided to retire, even if that retirement means working a day or so each week - between fishing trips, gardening, traveling and attending dog shows.

Beef recall incorrectly tracked to Burke
      There is no recalled beef in Burke County Public Schools after all. School officials had a scare last week when they were notified they had received and fed students beef that is part of a national recall activated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Hospital may need to tap county coffers
      For the first time in 15 years, the hospital may need help from local taxpayers. The Burke County Hospital Authority sat down in a rare meeting with the Burke County Commissioners last week to discuss the possibility.

Hundreds to participate in county-wide drill Saturday
      Several hundred volunteers and emergency workers will come together in Waynesboro Saturday to test Burke County's ability to deal with a health crisis.

Students graduate from high school, technical college at the same time
A step ahead
      When Curtney Lewis graduates this May, she'll mark two notches in her belt. On top of her diploma from Burke County High School (BCHS), she'll receive certification as a criminal justice specialist from Augusta Technical College (ATC).

Good News rally at park
This Saturday
      Good news spreads fast. "Good News on the Move," an evangelistic group of 11 young men, from ages 17-21, will be visiting schools, churches and clubs all week. The boys, who hail from as far away as Wisconsin and California, arrived Monday and went straight to work with visits to Burkehaven Chapel, Teen Scene and with numerous families around town.

Rotary club's 'Project Hugs' is huge
      Waynesboro Rotary Club members Patricia Keefer and Billy Joe Johnson braved Wednesday's high winds in front of their 10 by 10 storage room. Two weeks ago, it was empty. Today, it's packed to the gills with teddy bears, monkeys and frogs.
