Officials say policy changes could impact services
      Burke Medical Center could be headed for troubled times, according to administrator Jennifer Royal. Changes in the Medicaid program over the past couple of years have proven devastating to many of Georgia's rural medical communities, which largely serve Medicaid patients, she said.

EOA owes county nearly $10,000 in unpaid bills
      The CSRA EOA will be without discounted fuel prices if they can't pay their bill. At last Tuesday's county commission meeting, the commissioners voted to temporarily cut the group off from purchasing fuel from the county for lack of payment.

Planters EMC awards Free Indeed its first grant
      The ministry that Lexie TenHuisen began inside the Burke County Jail will soon take her around the world. In April, she will travel to Munich, Germany to share the fruits of her labor at the ninth annual "In His Image: Women of Excellence" conference.

Charter school proposed for at-risk students
      A group of residents in Burke County would like to start a charter school for at-risk students. The idea and preliminary plans for Boggs Charter Academy were presented to the Burke County Board of Education last Thursday by the Boggs Community Development Corporation (BCDC).

No contaminated beef in schools
      No recalled beef ever made it to lunch trays in Burke County schools. Groups question impact of new nuclear reactors on river
      Advocacy groups opposed to the construction of new nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle continue to raise concerns about impacts on the Savannah River. Several of the groups signed on to a letter to Southern Company, which operates the plant, asking it to abandon its plans for additional reactors.

Shriners Hospitals provide free healthcare to some Georgia children
      For a community that loves (and gives to) its Shriners, the news couldn't have hit closer to home. Shriners Hospitals made a deal with the State of Georgia last week to provide free healthcare coverage for children enrolled in the PeachCare for Kids program - and local Shriner Jimmy Allen made the trip to Greenville, S.C., to sign that agreement.

      The days will be longer for elementary and middle school students in summer school this year. Burke County summer school students in third through eighth grades will attend full school days as opposed to the half days of previous years.

Up and away
     Burke County's youngest basketball players scored big this season when they signed up for First Baptist Church's Upward program. The outreach sports program attracted more than 80 first through sixth graders, not to mention their cheerleading squads. According to church leaders, the program not only provides a positive atmosphere for sportsmanship, but is infused with lessons of faith. "We have had a wonderful season and are grateful for the support of this community and our Upward ministry," Rev. Al Wright said after the season closers Saturday.
