Bulldogs dash Bears' playoff hopes
      It all came down to the last five minutes. The final half of the final quarter meant the difference for the Bears in the second round of the region playoffs last Wednesday night. In the end, Burke County High School fell to Thomson High School 72-56 and finished the season.

Lady Bears end season in first playoff round
      The Washington County High School Lady Hawks cut short the Lady Bears' dance in the playoffs. Burke County High School fell to Washington County 37- 35 in a heartbreaking loss last Tuesday night. When the buzzer sounded at the end of the third quarter, the Lady Bears held the lead.

Bears wrestle their way to state
      Above, Marcus Stephens topples South Effingham's Jason Screen at the Region 3- AAA Area Invitational. Stephens went on to win the 135-pound weight class and claim his second straight region title.

Spartans advance to state playoffs
      It's not over for the Spartans. In their most crucial game of the season, the boys upset Trinity Christian School 66-60 during the first round of region playoffs, ending the Crusaders' season while putting themselves in contention for the AA title.

Lady Spartans close out season
      Basketball has come to an end for the Lady Spartans but not without a season of which they can be proud. Edmund Burke Academy's girls varsity team (10-12, 1-7) was eliminated from the Region 2-AA tournament when Memorial Day School pulled a slim 50- 42 win over them last Tuesday, Feb. 12.

SENIOR LADIES
The Lady Spartans will lose four seniors to graduation this year. Here's what the coach had to say about them:
      Caroline Collins: She's the ultimate team player with a great attitude. It's an honor to coach someone with her character. Katie Kittrell: Katie averaged 24.3 points per game and has more than 1,700 points in her career. She's one of the best EBA basketball players of all time - a great player but an even better person.

      The top dog in the 2008 Ga-Lina Amateur Derby Classic is Cassique's Velocity, a pointer male owned by Fred and Bernice Rowan of Atlanta and handled by Tim Moore of Colquitt.
