Board approves school calendar
      Students will head back to school a few days earlier next year. The Burke County Board of Education approved the 2008-2009 school calendar last week after letting students, parents and school employees vote for their favorite of four options. The school community voted overwhelmingly for the calendar with the earliest start date, Aug.

The Class of 2008 donned their best holiday getup in the school's annual fundraiser of the senior class. Pearls are a girl's friend, too
     Ginger Jenkins, left, was elated when Jan Blackburn, right, called her name as the winner of the pearl necklace raffle during the 12th annual Wimberly House Gala held last Saturday night. The event, which was attended by several hundred supporters, helps raise funds for the Wimberly House Ministries - an outreach ministry that offers child and senior citizen programs, counseling and support groups throughout Burke County. Fifteen local restaurants participated in the gala, offering up a huge selection of foods and desserts while attendees helped themselves STAFF - LISA J. CHANCE and were entertained by a live band. During the silent auction, William Mizell, owner of Mizell Ford, was the highest bidder of the jewelry items, which netted more than $3,000 for the fundraiser.

Mayor declares Spay Day
     Mayor declares Spay Day The City of Waynesboro has joined the nation in declaring next Tuesday, Feb. 26 "Spay Day USA." Mayor George DeLoach signed off on a resolution yesterday (Tuesday), calling on Waynesboro residents to observe the day by having their cats and dogs spayed or neutered or by sponsoring the same for someone else's pet. According to the resolution, dealing with pet overpopulation is a heavy burden on taxpayers - and one that could be drastically reduced by spaying and neutering.
