First deer
     Makenzie Posey, 6, killed her first deer on Jan. 14. She shot the doe from 100 yards while hunting in Burke County. She is the daughter of Robbie and Wendy Posey of Waynesboro.

With love
     Six-year-old Makenzy Veldboom made a sweet decision when she chopped off more than 10 inches of her strawberry blond hair to donate to Locks of Love. Marjorie Edmonds of Headrush the Salon in Waynesboro was her stylist. Makenzy initially just wanted a haircut, but after Marjorie told her about Locks of Love, she said, "Let's do this. Cut it all off!" Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 who suffer from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Celebrating 80 years
     Sarah Lillian Joyner celebrated her 80th birthday Dec. 8, 2007 with 49 of her relatives and friends. Special guests Bryan Slowinski, Kelly Hurst, Hal Smith and Louie Waits sang her favorite songs. All six of her children Stella Hall, Frankie Blackburn, Billy Oglesby, Jennie Johnson, Jake Oglesby and Jackie Hem were present for the celebration.

Spelling champ
     Burke County Middle School eighth-grader Cannon McClain won the countywide spelling bee. Moieshia McGee previously misspelled the word "proximity," and McClain correctly spelled that word and then "sociable" to take the top prize. The top two spellers from BCMS, S.G.A. Elementary and Blakeney Elementary School participated in the competition. McClain, the son of Howard and Stephanie McClain, will advance to the CSRA Bee to be held in March. The winner of the CSRA Bee will travel to the National Finals in Washington, D.C. in May. Other school level winners were Tyler Roberson, Craig Conyers, Moieshia McGee, Janell Williams and Jermaine Baxley.

Stellar sellers
     The Burke County High School FFA Ag Sales Team recently placed third in the Area 4 FFA Agricultural Sales Career Development Event. Ag sales team members are, from left, Jesse Boland, Heather Flake, Brittany Williams and Kayle Black. The purpose of the event is to increase the abilities of students by developing their sales potential. Students must pick an agricultural commodity and try to sell it to the judges.
