Six-year-old Makenzy Veldboom made a sweet decision when she chopped off more than 10 inches of her strawberry blond hair to donate to Locks of Love. Marjorie Edmonds of Headrush the Salon in Waynesboro was her stylist. Makenzy initially just wanted a haircut, but after Marjorie told her about Locks of Love, she said, "Let's do this. Cut it all off!" Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 who suffer from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Burke County Middle School eighth-grader Cannon McClain won the countywide spelling bee. Moieshia McGee previously misspelled the word "proximity," and McClain correctly spelled that word and then "sociable" to take the top prize. The top two spellers from BCMS, S.G.A. Elementary and Blakeney Elementary School participated in the competition. McClain, the son of Howard and Stephanie McClain, will advance to the CSRA Bee to be held in March. The winner of the CSRA Bee will travel to the National Finals in Washington, D.C. in May.
