Bidders lined up in front of the Burke County Court House Tuesday to sign up for the auction of properties with delinquent taxes. According to tax commissioner Cynthia McManus, 14 of the 32 properties offered up for bid yesterday were purchased. The owners of the properties still have 12 months to redeem their property if they reimburse the highest bidder the bid price, plus 20 percent interest and the cost of legal fees. If the owner fails to do so, the property goes to the highest bidder. More ... Downtown Waynesboro is on its way to becoming a certified "Main Street" community. Last week, city officials and downtown stakeholders met with Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) reps Mary Alice Applegate, above, and Jo Childers to plot their progress. "You're very much on track," Childers said, outlining strategies like an affiliation with the arts community and the construction of downtown lofts to help create tourism and foot traffic in the commercial area. Over the next few months, Downtown Development Director Andrea Stein and Downtown Development Authority (DDA) members and volunteers will be working through several more steps for Main Street designation, including the creation of a downtown building inventory and the adoption of DDA bylaws. Georgia State Patrol troopers from the Sylvania Post investigated four accidents in Burke County last month. According to SFC S.D. Young, those accidents resulted in five injuries and one death. Less than a week after four members of the K9 gang were jailed for armed robbery, two more teens were arrested for plastering a portion of East Waynesboro with their gang symbols. Last Tuesday, three GBI agents spotted the juveniles spray-painting symbols on a stop sign at Fulcher and East Seventh streets. The boys, who were 14 and 15, ran from the agents but were soon apprehended and charged with criminal trespass and willfully obstructing or hindering a law enforcement officer. After their arrests, more gang symbols, which were still tacky, were discovered on a nearby warehouse on East Eighth Street. "They may have been running with the big dogs, but they didn't have much of a bite," Chief Investigator Gene Boseman of the Waynesboro Police Department said in reference to the teens' alleged affiliation with the K9s.
