While Waynesboro utilities consumers may be using less, they'll soon be paying more. Last Tuesday night, city council gave a unanimous nod to hikes for water, sewer and solid waste. Burke County Middle School students recently participated in a Learn and Serve project preparing school kits for students in the Dominican Republic who lost their school in the fall hurricane season. BCMS sixth-graders learned about the culture and wrote letters to the students. Guest speaker, Cynthia Quick, provided the sixth-graders with a personal look at the students and their lives, as she has witnesses the poverty first hand in several trips to Baharona, DR. School kit supplies were donated and put together by middle school student volunteers. Math students compiled data as supplies were donated to determine the number of complete kits that were possible, and BCMS sent 55 individual kits, plus extra donations of paper, pencils and erasers for their teachers. More ... Beau Webster, a seventhgrade student at Burke County Middle School, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 11. The school-level bee was the first round in the 20th annual National Geographic Bee. Webster has since taken a written test which will be submitted for entrance into the state bee held in April. The annual event, which is held at Mobley Barn, is aimed at showing field trial participants local support for their annual trek to Burke County, as well as providing an opportunity for networking with Burke County residents and business leaders. According to chamber director Ashley Roberts, the field trials have an approximate $75,000 impact on the community each year. The event was sponsored by Mr. Golf Carts and Georgia Power Company.
