The Honorable is honored

Judge William M. Fleming, longtime Superior Court Chief Judge for the Augusta Judicial Circuit, was honored at a ceremony at the Burke County Court House last Thursday. The ceremony included the unveiling of Judge Fleming's portrait, which will hang in the courtroom with 11 other previous judges. Sheriff Greg Coursey called Judge Fleming, who sat on the bench for nearly 40 years and served as chief judge since 1979, a man of integrity, honesty, knowledge and loyalty. "He's probably had more influence on my life and (on my career) as a sheriff than any other person," Sheriff Coursey told the group of attorneys, judges, friends and family in attendance. Burke County State Court Judge Jerry Daniel, who was sworn in by Judge Fleming eight years ago, also called him "one of the most compassionate people (he'd) ever met." Judge Fleming, who said it was a great honor and a great privilege to have his portrait displayed in the courtroom, is retired but still presides occasionally.
