Farmers conserve natural resources through incentive program
      They take an interest in the environment for good reason ... their livelihoods depend on it. But an increasingly popular government program is giving farmers even more incentive to think green. The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) offers technical and financial help to agricultural producers who voluntarily begin certain environmentally friendly practices.

Advance voting begins next week
      While absentee ballots for the Feb. 5 Presidential Preference Primary election are available now, next week will be the only week voters may cast an early ballot without explanation. Advance voting begins Monday, Jan. 28, and will last through Friday, Feb. 1.

      Judge William M. Fleming, longtime Superior Court Chief Judge for the Augusta Judicial Circuit, was honored at a ceremony at the Burke County Court House last Thursday.

$22 million and counting
Georgia Power, Oglethorpe pay tax bills
      Most of Burke County's tax base was collected last week. Georgia Power Company and Oglethorpe Power Company (OPC) presented checks for their tax bills to the collective tune of nearly $22.5 million. Georgia Power's gi- ant check for $13,024,459 covered taxes for Georgia Power's property throughout the county, as well as its 45.7 percent share in Plant Vogtle.

Commission, BOE choose leaders
      Leaders for the Burke County Commission and Board of Education were recently chosen for the 2008 year. Jimmy Dixon was once again chosen to serve as chairman of the Board of Commissioners, and Wayne Crockett was elected vice chairman.
