Looking Back 10 years ago: Dec. 23, 1997 The Burke County Bears lost the state AAA football championship to Thomas County Central, 21-19. They ended the 1997 season with an overall record of 13-2. Coach Mike Falleur said the Bears put up a good fight against what was "probably the best high school football team in the state." Waynesboro native Charles L. Wallace was elected as vice-president of the Coca-Cola Company. 25 years ago: Dec. 22, 1982 BAS Inc. of Waynesboro was designated as a ValCom agricultural computer dealer and also marketed the IBM personal computer. Planters EMC and Georgia Power presented Waynesboro and Burke County with more than $3 million in property taxes for their share of Plant Vogtle. 50 years ago: Dec. 26, 1957 The homes of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Granade, Dr. and Mrs. M. D. Bentley and Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Dales took top honors in the Christmas decoration contest sponsored by the Burkeland Garden Club. "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," starring Anthony Quinn, and "The Oklahoman," starring Joel McCrea, were playing at the Grand Theatre. 75 years ago: Dec. 23, 1932 Writer Charlie Wallace wrote an article about Christmases past. He interviewed Mr. Charlie Gray, Mrs. Charlie Thomas, Mrs. Hattie Burton and Mr. S. Schwarzweiss. They all related stores of their childhood Christmas memories in Waynesboro in the mid 1800s. All, that is, except Mr. Schwarzweiss, who told of his boyhood in Germany, where he lived until 1871 when he came to America. |
