It was a long bus ride home to Jefferson County Friday night for the Lady Warriors.
The Burke County High School girls basketball team (5-2) trounced Jefferson
County High School girls 73-
28 Saturday night for their
largest margin of victory
this season.
Head coach Angelica Collins said the girls played
well and made up for a
"flat" night on Friday,
when the Lady Bears fell
to Greenbrier High
School 69-49.
"They were a whole lot more focused. I could tell when I walked into the locker room," Collins said of the team's attitude Saturday night. "They were determined to get a win. I told them that's the kind of effort we need the rest of the season."
In the win, freshman Antornia Walker led the Lady Bears once again in scoring, finishing with 21 points. Junior Whitney Jenkins, who had been nursing an ankle injury for the past week, put up 18 points, 12 of those from the 3-point line.
Senior Kiondra Mobley made three 3-pointers and two field goals to score 15 points for the night.
The girls were able to maintain their focus even after a small leak in the gym roof caused the game to be moved to the middle school after just a few minutes of play in the third quarter.
Jenkins and sophomore Eddriss Miles led Burke County Friday night against Greenbrier, each posting 10 points. Jenkins hit one 3- pointer.
Juniors Yasma Lynch and Christianna Free each scored 7, with Lynch 5-9 and Free 5- 8 from the free-throw line.
The girls won't play again until after Christmas when they head to Madison for a tournament Dec. 27-29. Their first game will be played at 1 p.m. at Madison Middle School. Times and locations of subsequent games in the tournament will depend on how well the girls fare on the 27th.
They will pick back up after the holidays with a home game against Hephzibah High School Friday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m.
