BCMS students donate free rice
Burke County Middle School students are learning vocabulary words and, at the same time, helping end world hunger. By accessing the freerice.com website, students are able to participate in this Learn and Serve sponsored project. For each word a student gets correct, 20 grains of rice is donated to the United Nations World Food Program. To make this project more interesting, Dr. Allen Kicklighter, Project Learn and Serve Director, challenged BCMS students to figure out how many grains of rice were in a pound. Taylor Posey, a seventh grade student, came up with the correct answer, which was 22,680 grains of rice. Dr. Kicklighter presented Posey with a $50 check to donate to the Empty Stocking Fund. Her donation put her seventh grade class in the lead for raising the most money and earning a pizza party.
