ON A ROLL
Spartans go 2-0 to start season
By Diana Royal Staff Writer

STAFF - ELIZABETHA BILLIPS Boyd Lively reaches high to give the Spartans possession of the ball during their match-up against Twiggs Academy last Friday night.
While the Spartans may have conquered only one basketball game last season, so far this year, Edmund Burke is undefeated on the court.

They claimed two wins last week, defeating Nathanael Greene Academy 48-35 and Twiggs Academy, 72-34.

"It's great to start out with a win," Spartan head coach Todd Layton said after last Tuesday's match-up against Nat Greene. "I'm proud of the effort … we were in early foul trouble and Alex Sturkie, Tyler Rowland and Alex Rogers stepped in and played well. Our depth was very important tonight."

He commended the team for playing hard and rebounding the ball well, but the Spartans were 4-20 from the free-throw line. "We must improve that," Layton said.

For the night, Jim Sandeford had 16 points, including a threepointer, and Jeremy Hayes had 15, including 2 three-point shots.

Boyd Lively had 11 rebounds, and Sandeford, 7. Sandeford also had 4 steals, and Hayes and Bernie Smith had 3 each.

On Friday, Nov. 30, the Spartans took an early lead against Twiggs and ran with it. By halftime, the boys led 35-9 and outscored them in the second half, 37-25.

Again, Layton said his team rebounded well and that their depth was a key factor in the win. "We got many contributions from the whole team. Hayes had a strong game scoring, and Lively and Sandeford (had strong games) on the board," he said. "The boys have started 2-0 and must continue to work very hard to improve every day."

Hayes tallied 20 points for the night, with Lively picking up 13. Lively and Sandeford led in rebounds with 12 and 10, respectively.

The team was 9-14 from the free-throw line.

This week, the Spartans face Twiggs again on Thursday, Dec. 6, and Curtis Baptist, Friday, Dec. 7. They played Nat Greene Tuesday, Dec. 4, but results were not available at press time.
