If the opening weekend of the season was any indication, the Bears are knocking on the door to something big.

The Burke County High School boys basketball team (2- 0) owned the court, hammering Jenkins County High School 81- 16 and thrashing rival Jefferson County 74-47 on the Warriors' home court.

Despite the big wins, head coach Purvis Dukes retained his typical conservative outlook.

"It was a good way to start the season," he said, hesitating to even go on. "We're pleased with where we are, but we're not satisfied. We've got to stay hungry. Everybody's going to give you their best shot, and we have to be ready."

The romp over Jenkins County Friday night saw four Bears rack up points in double-digits. Senior Maurice Doyle put 21 points on the board, delivering a few dunks in the mix. Senior DeVonda Lewis put up 16 points, including a threepointer, and senior Mack Golden recorded 14 in his first varsity start. Junior Bobby Burum shot for 12.

All 15 players on the roster saw some time on the court, with the starters doing very little after the first couple of minutes in the third quarter.

On Saturday, the Warriors gave the Bears a fight in the first quarter, taking an early 14-2 lead. But Burke County scored 27 points in the second quarter and they were off.

"That kind of put things out of reach," Dukes said.

Three Bears saw their second night of double-digit scoring. Lewis led with 23 points, 21 of those by half time. Doyle scored 12, dunking the ball four times in the third quarter alone. Burum put up 11, dunking the ball once and hitting a threepointer. Golden saw another good night with 9 points.

The Bears traveled to Harlem High School Tuesday, but scores were not available at press time.
