Looking Back 10 years ago: Dec. 3, 1997 Beatrice Griffin of Sardis was the new owner of the first Habitat for Humanity home built in the county. Officer Gene Boseman was named the new investigator for the Waynesboro Police Department. Jim Griffin, 12-year-old son of Dr. and Mrs. Shelley Griffin, killed a 7-foot tall grizzly bear on a trip to British Columbia. 25 years ago: Dec. 1, 1982 Three new county commissioners, Spencer Ready, Herman Lodge and Woodrow Harvey, joined veterans Ray DeLaigle and Toby Lovett on the local governing board. Sylvia Griffin of Waynesboro was among the first to graduate from the family nurse-practitioner program at Georgia Southern College. 50 years ago: Dec. 5, 1957 H. W. Stone defeated Holder Watson in the Waynesboro mayoral election by a vote of 553 to 527. Charles Economos, Leon Mims, J. M. Lovett, T. R. Holton and D. J. Roof were elected to the city council. Amanda Russell scored 28 points and led the Waynesboro High girls basketball team to a 36-24 victory over Hephzibah. 75 years ago: Dec. 2, 1932 Waynesboro undertaker G. A. Lewis directed the burial at sea of J. A. Clark of Valona. County agent Joel Chappell reported an outbreak of hog cholera in the county and urged all farmers to have their hogs inoculated and to go ahead and slaughter all those which were "fat enough." |
