New police chief patrols Midville

There's a new lawman watching over Midville.

Police chief Byron Walker, the city's third in as many years, took the helm of the department last week.

Chief Walker recently retired from the Calipatria Police Department near California's southern border and moved to Louisville, his father's hometown.

"It was really an answer to a prayer," Walker said. "I wanted to stay close to my family, but I also wanted to work. Midville is a blessing."

Walker was chosen after a screening committee at the Burke County Sheriff's Office interviewed several applicants. The Midville City Council requested their help in finding the right fit for the position, which has been plagued by high turnover.

Walker, a career lawman who grew up in California, entered the Allen Hancock Police Academy when he was 17 years old and later attended College of the Redwoods.

He served with the Pismo Beach Police Department, Tri- Counties Police Department, L.A. County Police Department and Tularia County Sheriff's Department before retiring on the Calipatria force.

Walker said he is thankful for the chance to serve and proud to hold the post near his father's hometown.

"I've always considered Georgia my home," he said, reminiscing about the summers he spent here as a child.

Walker's only disappointment came when he went in search of a large body of water at Coleman Lake.

"I was ready to get my jet skis out of storage," he said with a hearty laugh.
