The economic outlook for our Jenkins County neighbors is looking bleak. The announcement of MI Industries closing its doors and the loss of nearly 200 jobs is devastating for their community.
I was proud when I saw the "MI"logo on a window or sliding glass door in building supply stores.
The custom sliding glass doors in my home were manufactured by MI in Tennessee. We had an issue with one of the doors - nothing serious, but the MI folks in Jenkins County helped us get the problem solved.
Burke County gets tax revenue from Jenkins
County residents who purchase items here. With
the loss of so many jobs on the heels of Jockey and Cavalier cutbacks, Jenkins will suffer tremendously.
Burke County is being dealt a similar blow with the closing of Samsons Manufacturing in December. Galaxy, Samsons distribution plant will remain strong and open.
Samsons owner Ric Lichtenburg has finally had to hand over the manufacturing to foreigners to compete in the selling market. He held on as long as he could and we should thank him for the loyalty and dedication he has shown us.
Many of those who will get pink slips worked at Samsons most of their adult lives. Many Burke Countians began their first job at Samons. My second job was at Samsons.
Thanks, Ric, for all you do for Burke County. There is rumor of a new industry locating in Burke County. I hope we get good news soon.
