Taking the bait

Police are trying to figure out who made off with a gazillion worms.

Last Thursday, a Waynesboro woman reported that someone stole an old refrigerator from outside her Dowell Street home.

And it wasn't just any fridge - the victim had converted it into a bait bed.

According to the report, the fridge was full of live worms, $47 worth to be exact, and has the victim's name painted across it.

At your service

A pedestrian thought Family Dollar's Coca-Cola machine was being serviced … that is, until the would-be servicemen threw a sheet over it and loaded it into a pick-up truck.

She reported the incident to officers who confirmed her suspicions two days later.

Burke County deputies found the machine in some woods off Highway 80. The change had been stolen, but all of the drinks were still inside.

In threes

Good thing for insurance. Last week was a rough one for the City of Waynesboro, beginning on Monday when an employee reported that the city's Barron Street building had been vandalized. According to the police report, the front door was knocked out and several windows were shattered.

The next morning, a public works employee reported that someone threw a rock through the windshield of a parked service vehicle. Three hours later, another employee reported that a city-owned vehicle was involved in a wreck on College Street.

What a gas

A Burke County man was jailed after he tried to pull one over on deputies Monday.

According to a report filed at the Burke County Sheriff's Office, officers were checking a truck parked on Highway 25 when Michael Oglesby Jr., 22, walked up with a gas can.

He told officers he'd run out of gas and was being helped by homeowners who gave him permission to take some from their golf cart. When officers escorted Oglesby to that residence, they found a hosepipe on the golf cart and a much different story. The homeowners said they'd never talked to the offender before and wanted him off their property. Oglesby is charged with criminal trespass and theft by taking.
