Looking Back 10 years ago: Oct. 15, 1997 Burke County Tax Commissioner Cynthia McManus said that delinquent taxpayers would soon have their names published in the newspaper. She estimated the list would have 250 names. A monument was erected at the Midville United Methodist Church in honor of Dr. Young J. Allen, a missionary to China, his wife, Mary Houston Allen, Captain John Price Allen, a Civil War leader, and his wife, Kittie Pierce Allen. 25 years ago: Oct. 13, 1982 A special election mandated by the U.S. District Court attracted 12 candidates for five county commission posts. The election was set for Nov. 2 by Judge Anthony Alaimo following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision that at-large elections in the county lessened the voting power of black citizens. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joe Frank Harris made an appearance in Waynesboro and promised more efficient state government if elected. 50 years ago: Oct. 17, 1957 Waynesboro High School's Purple Hurricanes defeated Millen by a score of 12-6. "The Seven Year Itch" starring Marilyn Monroe was playing at the Burke Drive-In. Ann B. Harden Realty Co. advertised a 4-bedroom, 2-bath house on 148 acres for $14,500. 75 years ago: Oct. 14, 1932 There was an ongoing debate about whether the newly paved Peach Orchard Road or the McBean Road should be designated the "George Washington Highway." It was pointed out that Washington actually traveled from Waynesboro to Augusta on the McBean route. Sears and Roebuck advertised new car batteries for $3.95 (with trade-in) and house paint for $2.69 per gallon. |
