Cubs roar like Bears on gridiron Burke County Middle School's seventh-grade football team claimed the region title after a perfect season that ended in a victory over Screven County. The Cubs were 4-0, and turned in performances that bode well for future teams at the high school. Running back Brice Roundtree, who was named offensive player of the game, rushed for 288 yards on 18 carries against Screven County. A 94-yard return on an interception for a touchdown bumped his all-purpose yard tally up to 382 yards. Running back Carlton Homes helped the Cubs out with six rushes for 20 yards and carried the ball into the end zone for one of Burke County's touchdowns. Quarterback Kelvin Henry completed two passes for 20 yards and rushed four times for nine yards. Dakota Flake led the Cubs defense with four tackles, four assists and a fumble recovery for 50 yards. "I am proud of the guys for finishing perfect this season," head coach Billy Marchman said. "These kids have a lot of talent and believe they will win every time they take the field. It is a privilege to coach these kids, because their attitudes reflect their pride that they take in performing each week." Assistant coaches for the middle school include Daniel Hance, Brad Ferguson, Rashad Carter, Robert Allen, Brandon Carlson, Travis Herndon and Roosevelt Johnson. |
