Big bats earn Lady Bears pair of wins
By Anne Marie Kyzer Staff Writer

The Burke County High School softball team had two victories to celebrate following a doubleheader against St. Vincent's Academy Saturday.

The Lady Bears ran laps around the bases, posting high scores in both games. They won the first 16-9 and the second, 12-11.

Burke County coach Donald Wheeler said his team continues to show improvement each week, especially offensively. But the coach wants to see the girls play a complete game defensively and keep their opponents from tallying so many runs.

Junior Mallorie Shaw turned in another good performance on the mound, striking out nine batters and allowing only three hits in the first game. She struck out 10 and allowed seven hits in the second game.

Veronica Henderson's quick feet paid off big for the Lady Bears in both games. The senior stole five bases and scored six runs Saturday afternoon. She was 2-4 in game one with a double and 2 RBIs and 1-2 in the second with a double.

In the first game, Kristin Hammett was 2-5 and helped the Lady Bears out with 3 RBIs and a double. Haley Taylor was 2-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI, and Taylor Tidewell was 2-5 with a double. Tidewell scored two runs in the victory.

Xavier Solomon helped pull off the win in game two, going 1-2 with an RBI and a stolen base. Taylor was 1-2 and crossed home plate three times for the Lady Bears, and Myeka Whitfield was 1-2 with a double.

The Lady Bears traveled to Hephzibah earlier last week but were defeated by the Lady Rebels 5-4.

Burke County hosted South Effingham High School yesterday (Tuesday), but scores were not available at press time. They travel to Statesboro this afternoon (Oct. 3) to play a doubleheader against Liberty County High School and will get started at 4:30 p.m.

Burke County's last home softball games are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6, starting at noon. The Lady Bears will host Richmond Hill High School.
