From the Blotter Jeepers, peepers A Perkins man called deputies after he watched another man dump thousands of quail eggs in a Burke County dumpster. According to a report filed at the Burke County Sheriff's Office, David Sandsteat dumped eggs and newborn quail into the dumpster and left them for dead. Sandsteat, who raises quail, told officers that if the eggs don't hatch within a certain window, as was reportedly the case with those, the chicks are crippled and unable to survive on their own. Officers said the Perkins man had gathered up a cooler full of live chicks he was trying to save, while others were actively hatching in the dumpster. While it was not clear if Sandsteat would be charged, the deputy did report that Sandsteat agreed to talk with the solid waste department about the proper method of disposal. On the run A Waynesboro man broke into a Grubbs Street residence and then went out the window in an attempt to escape police. O'Brian Lemar Steele, 20, of 128 Lee St., was eventually tracked down and arrested last Wednesday, Sept. 26, on three warrants and a new charge of obstructing or hindering a law enforcement officer. Officers were called to the area after two possibly wanted men were spotted. According to a report filed at the Waynesboro Police Department, the man with Steele took an infant from his arms, allowing him to run. Steele was spotted at the Grubbs Street residence, attempting to climb out a window. Officers then found him lying on the ground at Top Quality Automotive and pulled him by the leg as he tried climbing the fence. Officers were unable to find the "small brown object that looked like a cigarette" that he threw over the fence. The man with Steele was released to his grandmother, and the infant was left with Steele's mother, the report said. Main Street mayhem Two vehicles in the Huddle House parking lot were damaged by gunshots on Sunday. According to a police report, the vehicles' owners said that two men pulled out handguns and began firing at each other in the parking lot. Officers later received information on the location of one of the men, Johnathan Zandell Chance, 19. He turned himself in and told officers that he had left the gun in the parking lot of Brentwood Terrace Nursing Home. The firearm was found to be stolen in a burglary earlier that month. Chance was charged with one count each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm on Sunday, criminal damage in the second degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and theft by receiving stolen property. According to investigators, a warrant has been issued for the second man believed to be involved in the incident, Terell "Dip" Hughes.
