Bears cross country takes off

The Burke County High School cross country team started the season last Thursday with a meet at Ebenezer Retreat Center hosted by South Effingham High School.

Bears coach Bill Knight said it was a competitive event with more than 160 athletes attending.

Top runners for Burke County included freshman Joshua Jones, who placed 20th out of 91 with a time of 20:2; senior Synquis Givens, who finished 17th out of 75 with a time of 25:35; and sophomore Jaquetta Chandler, who placed 25th with a time of 26:23.

Coach Knight said he's looking for all the runners to continue improving their times through the season and boost the team's results.

The Bears traveled to Swainsboro for their second meet yesterday (Tuesday), but results were not available at press time.
