Looking Back 10 years ago: Sept. 10, 1997 Burke County Commissioners approved a referendum on a $9.25 million Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). County administrator Billy Hopper said the county's share of the money would go toward upgrading unpaved roads. The Burke County Bears opened their football season with a 28-14 victory over Screven County. Edmund Burke Academy defeated Memorial Day School of Savannah 28-27 with a 2-point conversion. 25years ago: Sept. 8, 1982 The Georgia Department of Transportation concluded that no traffic light was needed at the intersection of Liberty and Eight streets. The study was done at the request of city officials because of traffic problems near the post office. The Waynesboro High School Purple Hurricanes, under the leadership of new football coach Bill Upchurch, defeated Wrens 26-6 in the season opener. Georgia Southern College resumed its football program after a hiatus of 41 years. 50 years ago: Sept. 12, 1957 H. H. (Zip) White Jr. assumed the management of The Varsity Shop from Henry Manau. Paul B. Dye was elected president of the Burke County Livestock Association. Richardean Hatcher was named captain of the WHS cheerleaders. 75 years ago: Sept. 9, 1932 Candidates for the United States Senate from Georgia included Charles R. Crisp and Richard B. Russell Jr. "Society Girl" starring Spencer Tracy and Peggy Shannon was playing at the Grand Theatre. |
