EBA goes 2-2 on the diamond
By Diana Royal Staff Writer

The Lady Spartans began their season with a head coach only two weeks on the job, but their 2-2 record shows the change hasn't thrown them off course.

Their first loss of the season came last Tuesday at the hands of AAA school Pinewood Christian Academy.

"Considering it was our first game, I knew we would have some mistakes," Lady Spartans head coach Aaron Phillips said. "The girls played really uptight, we made too many errors and walked too many people. You just can't make those types of mistakes when you play a team like Pinewood."

EBA garnered no hits during the three-inning game that ended 16- 1 in Pinewood's favor.

Two days later, however, the Lady Spartans showed up to play, claiming a 10-0 victory over Curtis Baptist.

Senior Krislyn Lee was the star both offensively and defensively, pitching a shutout game with 7 strikeouts and going 3-3 with 2 singles and 1 homerun.

Other leading hitters were Daryn Collins, 2-3 with 2 singles; and Ashley Bowman, 2-3, also with 2 singles.

Phillips said he was happy with his team. "We played good defense and hit the ball really well against a pitcher who has beat us the past two years," he said.

Edmund Burke picked up a second win Friday, Aug. 17, when they met up against the Thomas Jefferson Academy Lady Jaguars during the Brentwood Tournament.

"We started out with solid hits," Phillips said, adding that the team had a few errors in the fifth, which allowed the Lady Jags to make a comeback. "But we ended up on top."

Collins delivered 5 strikeouts from the mound, while allowing 8 walks. She was 2-4 at bat, with 2 singles. Kayla Milligan was 3-4 with 3 singles and Bowman was 2- 4 with 2 singles.

As a team, the Lady Spartans had 13 hits and 6 errors.

In a 3-0 loss to Brentwood on Saturday, Aug. 18, pitcher Allie Lewis struck out five batters while Milligan and Collins once again led at bat, both going 1-2 with a single.

"We played very well," Phillips commented. "Brentwood is a very solid team. We held them to three runs, and their pitcher is probably the best we'll face all year ... this was a moral victory for us."

The Lady Spartans will play TJA again this Thursday, Aug. 23.
