Lady Bears tame Laney Wildcats in season opener What a way to start the season. The Lady Bears softball team beat Lucy Laney High School 17-5 Monday afternoon in their first game of the season. Head coach Donald Wheeler was proud to see such a strong offense from the girls, who scored in every inning except the fifth. The Lady Bears chalked up nine runs in the sev- enth inning alone. "I was pleased with the discipline we showed at the plate," Coach Wheeler said. "We did not swing at a lot of bad pitches." Kristen Hammett led the Lady Bears, going three for five and sending three runners home. Veronica Henderson, who was two for five, had two RBIs, and Morgan Bell recorded two hits and a double. Winning pitcher Mallorie Shaw struck out nine batters and held the Wildcats to one earned run. The Lady Bears began play in the Thomson Invitational Tournament yesterday (Tuesday), playing Washington- Wilkes High School, but scores were not available at press time. They face Aquinas and Thomson, at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. today, respectively, in the tournament. |
