Looking Back 10 years ago: Aug. 13, 1997 A white German shepherd cared for by many passing motorists on Highway 25, south of Waynesboro, was found dead after it was run over by a vehicle. Waynesboro native Harry Coursey retired after a 26-year career with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Caroline Richardson and Roosevelt McWilliams joined the Burke County office of the University of Georgia Extension Services. 25 years ago: Aug. 11, 1982 Bo Ginn carried Burke County with 77 percent of the vote and led the state with 35 percent. He was headed for a runoff in the governor's race with Joe Frank Harris who got 24.5 percent. Other winners were State Representative Emory Bargeron, Lt. Gov. Zell Miller and Max Cleland for Secretary of State. 50 years ago: Aug. 15, 1957 Harold Stone announced he would be a candidate for Mayor of Waynesboro to succeed Ben Brooks. Bob Taylor of Brunswick assumed his duties as the new city recreation director. L. W. Reddick resigned his position as clerk of the Burke County Commission to accept a job at the Bank of Sardis. 75 years ago: Aug. 12, 1932 The Grand Theatre was scheduled to re-open with modern new equipment for the showing of pictures with sound. A meeting of "The Women of Burke County" was to be held at the pavilion of the Waynesboro Country Club. Topics to be discussed included: "The ideal women of 1932" and "What women can do to save their homes." |
