FBC opens heat shelter
By Elizabeth Billips Associate Editor

First Baptist Church is offering relief from the summer heat.

With forecasts topping the 100s, church members have decided to turn their fellowship hall into a short term heat shelter for residents without air conditioning.

According to associate pastor Don Veldboom, the Liberty Street facility will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day the temperature rises to 100 degrees or hotter.

He said bottled water will be provided, and most likely, videos will be shown.

Residents are encouraged to bring along books, magazines and snacks.

The shelter is open to all residents, and they are asked to check in at the church office.
