Investigation continues in Hwy. 23 wreck
By MeShae Hankerson Intern

The Georgia State Patrol is still probing a July 15 wreck that left a teenager critically injured.

According to a GSP spokesperson, three Waynesboro teens were hurt when the driver hit a tree and flipped a pick-up on Georgia Highway 23 near Padgett's Farm.

At the time, troopers identified the driver as 18-year-old James Fitts Jr., who was unconscious for some time after the wreck.

The two passengers were identified as Charles Williams Jr., 20, who remains unconscious and in critical condition, and Kendrick Harris, 18, who only suffered minor injuries.

However, based on information Fitts provided after regaining consciousness approximately two weeks ago, family members now question the initial findings.

In an interview with The True Citizen, Fitts' mother said her son was not behind the wheel as originally believed and that the wrecked truck is not his.

She maintains that Harris was actually driving and was in pos- session of the unregistered vehicle.

Troopers say they are looking into the new evidence as they continue the investigation.

All three were within a mile of their residences when the wreck occurred.
