Only a flesh wound

A Waynesboro couple was jailed Saturday after shots were fired on West 13th Street.

According to a report filed at the Waynesboro Police Department, the three victims, who included teenage twins, were allegedly walking along the road just after midnight when they heard Joni Gill, 22, using fighting words toward their family members who lived near her.

Shortly thereafter, they said, Gill's boyfriend, 23-year-old Eric Pete, stepped out of his apartment and began firing shots at them.

When interviewed by police, Gill said the ordeal got started when an unknown man fired a gun at her backdoor and she was struck in the leg.

Pete said when he learned his girlfriend had been shot, he got upset and fired several rounds into the air.

Police began to question the story, however, when EMA technicians failed to find any wounds on Gill.

While the couple originally denied having a gun, they eventually turned over a small handgun and were arrested for disorderly conduct and interference with police.

The day prior, officers were called to the same area three times to break up arguments between the couple and their neighbors.

A bellyful

Two teenage cousins were arrested after they crashed a passedout neighbor's party and had their fill of beer.

According to a report filed at the Burke County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to Midville when Howard Freeman, 17, came home intoxicated and got into an argument with his parents "who were not pleased by this fact."

When interviewed by deputies, Freeman's 18-year-old cousin Anthony Turberville said they'd decided to get some beer after watching the neighbor go inside his Burton Street home and pass out.

He said they went in uninvited but stayed around drinking with adults.

Things began to get sticky when Freeman reportedly began picking fights.

After both teens failed multiple sobriety tests, they were taken into custody.

Turberville was charged with possession of alcoholic beverages by a minor, and Freeman was charged with public drunkenness, disorderly conduct and possession of alcoholic beverages by a minor.

Your brain on drugs

A Wallace Street resident called police after he was beaten and robbed by an acquaintance.

According to a report filed at the Waynesboro Police Department, the 48-year-old victim was allegedly walking down the street in the wee hours Saturday when the acquaintance pulled up and asked him to join him for a ride "around the circle."

The victim told police he got scared and decided to jump out and run home. The driver allegedly caught up with him and struck him on the face several times before emptying his pockets.

After reviewing their files, police realized the victim had contacted them the day prior to report having trouble with someone.

He'd told them a man named Mario gave him bad dope and was trying to make him pay for it, the police report said. The victim had refused to do so, on principle.
