Looking Back 10 years ago: July 16, 1997 Waynesboro businessman and civic leader G. Pratt DeLoach died at the age of 85. Former state attorney general Mike Bowers spoke to the Waynesboro Exchange Club. Bowers was a Republican candidate for governor. During the meeting, the club honored the Rev. Gene Paradise as Citizen of the Year and Rolene Rowell as Exchangite of the Year. 25 years ago: July 14, 1982 Burke County Commissioners voted to extend a contract with Taylor's Barbecue for meals at the county jail. Jim Johnson and Joey Crenshaw of Waynesboro attended the first ever football camp at Georgia Southern, directed by coach Erskine Russell. E. L. Jackson of Waynesboro showed off a foot-long four and one-half pound zucchini squash he grew in his garden. 50 years ago: July 18, 1957 Lt. Gov. Ernest Vandiver spoke at Woodmen of the World ceremonies in Midville. During the event, a marker was unveiled honoring the late Dr. William Robert Lowe, and a plaque was presented to Dr. H. F. Bent who had practiced medicine in Midville for 51 years. 75 years ago: July 15, 1932 Six train carloads of watermelon were shipped from Waynesboro, the crop coming from different sections of the county. Whit Blount, who had been associated with the A & P store in Waynesboro, was named manager of the company's store on Ninth Street in Augusta. A. F. Evans reported to the Waynesboro Rotary Club on the organization's international convention recently held in Seattle, Wash. |
