Local woman indicted for murder
37 indicted, one cleared

A Midville resident accused of killing another woman with a steak knife has been indicted for murder.

The Superior Court grand jury returned "true bills" on 37 defendants, including Helen Bunyon, who is charged with the murder of 45-year-old Brenda Moody.

According to the original incident report, Moody and her husband were attending a party on Magruder Road April 14 when 52-year-old Bunyon, who was at another party across the street, walked over and began talking to the victim and another woman.

Shortly thereafter, the women got into a heated argument, and Bunyon reportedly got a steak knife and stabbed Moody in the chest and back of the head.

Although deputies have established that the women knew each other, they aren't sure why they were arguing.

Officers said Bunyon admitted to drinking several beers and shots of whiskey and was intoxicated when deputies found her walking along Highway 56.

After arresting her, officers found a steak knife in Bunyon's purse that was similar to the one recovered from the murder scene. In addition to murder charges, she was indicted for possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

A Waynesboro man arrested in an unrelated March stabbing was also indicted.

Tony Romon Brown allegedly held his ex-girlfriend and her three young sons hostage, then stabbed her three times with a steak knife.

When the oldest child, an 11-year-old, got away and ran for help, Brown stole the victim's car and fled, the incident report said.

Two days later, he turned himself in to deputies in Hampton County, S.C.

Brown was indicted on 10 felony charges including armed robbery, burglary, two counts of kidnapping, terroristic threats, aggravated assault, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime and three counts of cruelty to children in the third degree.

Two men arrested for dogfighting in Sardis were also indicted.

Lenwood Heath Jr. and Donald Lee Walker Jr. will face three charges of dog fighting apiece, as well as three charges of aggravated cruelty to animals.

They were both arrested last February after Screven County officers took Heath into custody on unrelated charges and discovered video footage of three dog fights saved on his cell phone.

The footage showed three smaller dogs being thrown into the pen with a pit bull where they were mauled and left for dead. Sardis police said the dogs were most likely abducted for practice fights.

One defendant was cleared of two charges related to an armed robbery attempt after the grand jury returned a "no bill," which normally indicates a lack of evidence.

Willie Franklin Bynes was arrested in November after two masked men assaulted a Jet Food Store clerk and attempted to rob the store at gunpoint.

Bynes was cleared of both charges - criminal attempt to commit armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
