Abrams wins county seat

Constituents in District 1 will now rely on the leadership of Lucious Abrams Jr., who won the commission seat in a seven-precinct sweep last night.
Just over 19 percent of the 2,398 qualified voters cast their votes, with 396 going to Abrams. His opponent, S. Ronald Reed, picked up 65 of the votes.
In Gough, Abrams held 96 of the 106 votes; in Keysville he garnered 46 of the 56; 48 of 61 in Midville; 20 of 29 in Munnerlyn; 44 of 47 of Scotts Crossroads; 73 of 77 in St. Clair; and 55 of 65 in Vidette.
According to Barbara Hammett, executive director of the Burke County Board of Elections and Registration, Abrams should be sworn into office within the next few weeks and will then take his place on the board of commissioners. Since Abrams replaces veteran commissioner Woodrow Harvey, who died earlier this year, he will have to run again in the state primary in July 2008 in order to serve a full four-year term.
